Post-Extraction
1. Numbing: Your child may experience the numbing sensation for 2 to 4 hours after the procedure. Please ensure that your child does not bite or play with their lip, cheek and/or tongue.
2. Bleeding: Please have the child bite on or apply firm pressure to gauze for 20-30 minutes until bleeding has stopped (up to 1 hour). If bleeding continues beyond 1 hour, please contact our office. Light oozing may continue and is considered normal.
3. Drinking: Please refrain from rinsing, spitting or drinking through a straw, sippy cup, or sports bottle for 24 hours.
4. Eating: Once the numbing sensation wears off, we recommend your child eats soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc.) for the first 48 hours. Please avoid foods that are spicy or acidic like orange juice or tomato sauce and foods that could get lodged in the extraction socket, such as rice or popcorn.
5. Discomfort: For discomfort, Children’s Tylenol can be given for pain relief. We advise you to avoid aspirin.
6. Swelling: We do not expect your child to experience any swelling, but slight swelling may occur the next day. You may apply an ice pack to the area for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off. Please call our office if swelling persists after 24 hours.
7. We do not expect your child to develop a fever, but a low-grade fever in the first 48 hours may occur. Please call our office if your child develops a fever.
8. We advise your child to refrain from physical activity for the rest of the day.
